London Marathon

This is the most famous marathon in the world and a much-loved London tradition. Although places to participate in the marathon have all been taken up by now, many Londoners love to line London’s streets along the route to cheer the runners on. There’s always a fantastic, party-like atmosphere, and plenty of runners dressed up in quirky outfits to raise awareness of various charities. The marathon takes place on Sunday 22 April and the finish line is near Green Park, just a short stroll away from The Athenaeum.

Underbelly Festival

London’s riverside starts to come alive during April, which includes the Underbelly Festival. An annual celebration of culture including comedy, circus, cabaret and children’s shows, events take place in convivial tents on the banks of the River Thames. There is also street food, open air bars and quirky seating areas to wend away afternoons alongside London locals. Underbelly Festival Southbank kicks off on 6 April.

Trafalgar Square celebrations

This public square is the most famous one in London, home to Nelson’s Column and The National Gallery. It’s also a popular spot for community gatherings and public parties. During April, Trafalgar Square will play host to the Feast of St George on 21 April and the Sikh Vaisakhi Festival on 28 April. Expect music, live performances and foodie treats.

Queen’s birthday

Although Her Majesty The Queen celebrates her official birthday in June, her actual birthday is on 21 April. The occasion is marked by gun salutes at the Tower of London and in Hyde Park, just a short walk from The Athenaeum. Given this, April is a fitting month to visit Buckingham Palace – the Queen’s London residence and administrative headquarters – which can be reached from The Athenaeum by walking across Green Park. Exclusive evening tours of Buckingham Palace are available throughout April (advance booking essential) or watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside the palace on several dates throughout the month. Happy birthday Ma’am!

Fashioned from Nature

The Fashioned from Nature exhibition takes place in South Kensington’s V&A Museum and opens on 21 April. As the name suggests, it’s all about exploring the relationship between fashion and nature. Exhibits date as far back as the 1600s, looking at fabrics, dyeing processes and fashions throughout the ages. Notable exhibits include a dress made with Vegea – a leather alternative made from grape waste – and photographs from the Greenpeace Detox Catwalk held in Bandung, Indonesia.
